Autistic Students in Higher Education: the need for a new school
A NECESSIDADE DE UMA NOVA ESCOLA
Abstract
This paper proposes a reflection on the evolution of Brazilian legislation on inclusion, showing how it reflects and drives changes in the conceptions of "normality" and "disability" in education. It also brings up the challenges and opportunities related to the inclusion of autistic students in higher education. The historical and legislative evolution related to inclusion has brought significant advances, but also persistent challenges. It can be seen that the transformation of the concepts of "normality" and "disability" has also influenced education in terms of valuing diversity and removing barriers. However, the transition is not simple and requires a continuous effort to ensure that theory is fully reflected in practice, especially in higher education, where there is still a lack of accessibility, especially in terms of attitudes and pedagogy.
